Travel Tips From Dr. Clifford Bassett

Clifford W. Bassett, M.D., Medical Director of Allergy and Asthma Care of New York is sharing some tips and best practices to consider as vacation time approaches.  For example:

  • Work with a travel agent to identify allergy-friendly hotels, airlines and restaurants
  • Pick accommodations that will offer you and your family control over food options and preparation
  • Research your destination and make sure to know the best way to get emergency help
  • Pack your Epipen (epinephrine) Auto-Injectors in original packaging, along with a copy of your anaphylaxis action plan and note from your doctor, in your carry-on bag
  • In advance and during your trip, communicate clearly with airline, hotel and restaurant staff about your or your child’s food allergies

I'm going to disagree with a couple of these. I've been living with this allergy for 47 years. We traveled internationally regularly as kids.

DO NOT put your epi in your carry on. It can be separated from you to easily. Keep it in your carry on till you clear security. Then transfer it to your money belt.

Have 2 notes from your doctor kept in 2 different places. The notes should be in their prescription pads according to my doctor. My doctor always explains specifically I need my epi because I can die after touching something with peanut residue. He includes the last 7 ER visits have been because of touch.

I show the note but not the Epi to the attendants when I fly.One time I had a paranoid flier behind me. She saw the Epi pen as a mysterious tube of liquid and reported me. Since I showed the doctor's note, they just asked me to show the nervous flier the note and the pen. I held a little inservice right there on the plane educating people around me.

Wanted to add these
Baby wipes - back when I was a kid Dad worked for Pearl Beer and they had these picnic kits that included a wipe. Mom would throw a bunch of those in a her purse. She used them to wipe down things like the tray.

If possible allergic person should sit either window or center with family members between them and the public. If that isn't possible speak up. I only had 2 negative reactions. One from a lady who was ticked at being seated next to 2 kids. Mom and Dad were in the smoking secction. Sis and I in the non smoking section. The gentleman in the aisle seat opposite her firmly suggested they switch seats. The other was from a flight crew that ticked off every single person on the plane. By the time I got to the counter to complain the The manager said "You were on flight XYZ are Here is the form, the crew has been pulled off, and we will be investigating. (In addition to swearing at me about the peanut issue they kept announcing we were going to OK city - our destination was Houston, they were abusive to a man who informed them he was claustrophobic, and to be blunt either they were sleep deprived or hung over.
